Restarting

Stopping mid-task without losing the thread

Longer note · updated October 2026

Stopping in the middle of a task feels wasteful. A short routine makes it painless.

Leave a restart note

Before you stop, write one or two lines: what you just did, and the very next step. "Finished section 2. Next: check the figures in section 3."

Stop at an easy point

If you can, stop just before an easy step rather than after a hard one. Starting next time is much quicker.

Keep files in one place

One folder per job, with the restart note at the top. No searching at the start of the next session.

Tell the client if needed

If the job won't finish by the agreed time, say so early, with a new realistic date.
